The River Room

From the Abingdon Blog, thank you to Alistair who does the blog and who is a regular visitor to the Garden.

The River Room

The River Room was open at St Ethelwold’s House. In the River Room, there is a Visitors Book. Here is a small and quite typical selection.

‘An amazing retreat to stumble across in Abingdon. I can’t believe I never knew this was here.’

‘I lived in Abingdon from 1964 to 67. I can’t believe I’d never been here before. Wonderful. I’ve done some knitting.’

‘I’m so glad I walked into this fabulous setting. Spring has finally started to do its magic, and flowers are coming up. The birds are singing, and I can watch the geese and riverboats. It’s a site for sore eyes after the harsh winter months.’

‘What’s a lovely place to stumble upon. We are studying at Oxford and decided to take a little day trip to explore Abingdon during our Christmas holidays. What a lovely place.’

‘Stumbled across the lovely garden. So tranquil.’

‘Thank you to all the people who make this what it is. It’s a beautiful place. Restores my soul.’

‘It’s my great joy that I was joined for about five minutes by a Kingfisher on one of the poles.’

When I left, I saw one of the volunteer gardeners cutting back plants, a visitor sitting on a bench enjoying the October sunshine, and a dragonfly resting on a garden table.

Tea Garden and Talk

Enjoy home made cakes in our lovely garden

Find out, if you are interested, about “People of St Ethelwold’s” at a short talk by Anne Dodd at 3.30.

Anne will tell us about St Ethelwold himself, and about Dorothea Pickering whose vision and generosity founded St Ethelwold’s House. Bede Griffiths, an inspiration in the early days, will also be featured.

St Eths Tea Garden

Do join us for our next Tea Garden. We are delighted to be welcoming more people who use wheelchairs and buggies since the work done to make an accessible path from the side gate right down into the garden. There is a mesh under the gravel to make access so much easier. Funds were raised towards this at our Tea Garden events, big thanks to all volunteers and donors!

Celebrating Kindness at St Eths Tea Garden

In June, the Jo Cox Foundation is celebrating The Great Get-Together – with the aim of helping people to make new, meaningful connections with others

As part of this on Tuesday June 27th, we’ll be Celebrating Kindness at our Tuesday afternoon Tea Garden at St Ethelwolds House. We’ll be offering FREE TEA, COFFEE AND SQUASH to everyone and there will be delicious cakes and other goodies to buy too. The gardens are looking specially lovely at the moment.

Maybe as part of your afternoon with us you could even get to chat to someone new to you – and make a connection in that way? We look forward to seeing lots of you there from 2.30 – 4.00 pm on Tuesday 27th June at St Ethelwolds House, 30 East St Helen’s Street, ABINGDON
